Pre-Teen Immunization Information from the CDC

The Importance of Pre-Teen and Teen Immunization

Did you know that while most infants and children get the vaccines they need, less than half of pre-teens and teens receive the vaccines specifically recommended for their age group? So, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) wants to provide parents with information about the vaccines that are recommended for their children entering their pre-teen or teen years.
And we at Marie's Saving Site and TwitterMoms want to help CDC get this important information out to moms.

Here are the facts:
There are serious diseases that kids are at increased risk for as they approach the teen years such as meningitis, whooping cough, and human papillomavirus (also known as HPV, the virus that can lead to cervical cancer in women);
Meningococcal infections are very serious and can result in long-term disability or even death
Pertussis, also called whooping cough, is not just a childhood disease—many teens are diagnosed with it each year
Certain strains of HPV, the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States, can cause cervical pre-cancer and cancer—every year in the U.S., about 12,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer, and nearly 4,000 women die from this disease
There are three vaccines recommended specifically for kids at ages 11 or 12 to protect them from these diseases:
Meningococcal vaccine, which protects against meningitis and its complications
Tdap vaccine, which is a booster against tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis
HPV vaccine, which protects girls and women against the types of HPV that most commonly cause cervical cancer
In addition, pre-teens (and all kids 6 months and older!) should get the flu vaccine every year. Even healthy kids can get the flu and it can be serious.
Kids should also have a medical check-up during their pre-teen years so their doctors can make sure they are up-to-date on vaccinations, recommend routine screening and discuss other ways to stay healthy.
For families with health insurance, all or most of the cost of vaccines is usually covered. For families without insurance, children age 18 and younger may be eligible to get the vaccines for free through the Vaccines for Children program (VFC).

Summertime Crafts with Glue Dots

I have been busy creating some projects for the summer with my Glue Dots. There are the custom greeting cards with cute butterflies and rhinestones that have brightened the days of quite a few people. Also, I used the dots to hold the ribbons on the silk floral arrangement for the President of the Tenant Council for my apartment complex who passed away last week.
I even used the dots to repair a statuette of Christopher Robin and Pooh that had an unfortunate encounter with my boisterous kitty, Travieso. Another repair job on two picture frames was made easy with the Glue Dots.
I sorted through some baskets and trims to create my custom gift baskets for my business and the Glue Dots have kept all the contents and trim in place. My daughter has put in her order for some floral arrangements and baskets. She has moved into her first apartment by herself and asked me for some decorating ideas.
I am finding endless uses for my Glue Dots. To read other entries go to the Twitter Moms site.
Happy Summer!

Celebrate the Season with Savings!

The holidays are upon us and what better time to hunt down bargains, deals, and free stuff. I have been super busy the past few months trying to finally get a college degree under my belt.

I have been neglecting Marie's Saving Site terribly, but I have still been keeping an eye out for a bargain.

I will be posting some of my shopping trips on the Featured Savings page, so look out for those. This time of year and especially in this economy, it is mandatory that I save tons of money. I am watching the classifieds for inexpensive electronics. Many people are selling that extra TV or DVD player for a little cash. Also, many more thrift stores have been cropping up.

I hope everyone is having a blessed Thanksgiving. See you soon on Marie's Saving Site!

September is Coupon Month

In honor of Coupon Month, I am spotlighting the Coupon Trains. I run about a dozen trains from Marie's Saving Site and Swap Savers. They are free and a great way to get more of the coupons you use and get rid of the ones you don't. You can even unload your expired coupons. I send them to overseas military bases that can use them for up to six months after they expire.
Here's how they work. I gather three names from the people who sign up on my site or Swap Savers. I send an envelope to the first 'passenger' on the list. When they get the coupons, they take out the ones they want and replace them with ones they don't use. The coupons then get mailed to the next person, etc. The last person mails them back to me. This continue until the passengers want to stop.
This is a great opportunity to get coupons that aren't available in your area. I also include magazines and other free offers when I have them.
I hope to see you on the Coupon Train!

New Improvements on Some Money Making Ideas

There is a lot of updating going on! Most of the survey sites have made it easier and faster to make money or points lately. One that stands out is my2cents, which is now Toluna. They have a great website where you can do quick polls to earn points. More surveys are also being offered.
Another stand out is MyPoints. They send out numerous emails a day with offers that let you rack up points quickly. And if you don't want to complete the offers, you get points just for reading the email or attempting the surveys.
Now, my favorite: SwagBucks! They have branched out and are giving out points on Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and their SwagBucks Newsletter. When you use their toolbar to search, the points are given out more frequently. They have also added the SwagGal feature and many new prizes to earn.
You can get the links for these offers and more at Marie's Saving Site.
See you there,
Marie

Coming Soon~Back to School Bargain Page

Within the next week I will be adding a new page on Marie's Saving Site. The Back to School Bargains page will have links to places where you can find hints, bargains, sales, coupons and info on school related issues. For example, there will be places where you can find textbook rentals instead of outright buying expensive books. You will also find ways to get designer clothes for your fashionista at bargain prices.

I will be using a new format for part of my Back to School page. I will have hints and tips that I have collected as opposed to just links to other sites. You will be able to share your money and time saving tips in a blog forum made just for this page.

I will be sending out an email notice when I post the new page, so watch your mailboxes. If you aren't signed up for our newsletter, make sure you click here to fill out the form so you don't miss a thing!
